<description>In januari was ik voor werk in de VS, voor 2 weken. De eerste week een hoop collega's ontmoet, 's avonds de&#160;stad (San Francisco) ingedoken, en in het weekend de toeristische&#160;trekpleisters bekeken: Golden Gate Bridge, Fisherman's Warf, en the Museum of&#160;Modern Arts.&#160;Daarna heb ik een week op het kantoor in de VS gewerkt en het&#160;laatste weekend besloten we (ik en 2 collega's) om de steden in de regio eens te gaan ontdekken. Een beetje zoals Aziaten heel Europa hopen te leren kennen in 7 dagen. Met de auto&#160;uiteraard.&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Maar eerst met het vliegtuig naar ons startpunt: Vegas. Of 'Crazy city', zoals een vrouw die&#160;daar elk weekend (soms met haar kinderen) naar toe ging de stad noemde. Om&#160;te ontspannen. Niet mijn idee van ontspannen, maar indrukwekkend was&#160;het wel. Het vliegtuig net uitgestapt is het eerste dat je op het&#160;vliegveld ziet een lange rij one-armed bandits: de slot machines.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Als je dan dichterbij de stad komt lijkt het of je een pretpark inrijdt: palmbomen&#160;langs de wegen, helder verlicht (Lampegat is er niks bij)&#160;door straatreclame, casino's en hotels. Het verschil tussen casino's en&#160;hotels is vaak niet duidelijk: bij elk hotel is de begane&#160;grond een casino. Wij sliepen in het Luxor, een gigantische&#160;piramide met een lichtbaken dat uit de punt komt en dat de piloot in&#160;elk overvliegend vliegtuig verblindt. Voor weinig geld overigens, want&#160;geld komt in Vegas wel op andere manieren binnen. Als je niet van&#160;plan bent om te gokken kun je je er tegen een laag budget een hele nacht&#160;goed vermaken.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;De dag erna reden we al weer op tijd weg richting de meest&#160;indrukwekkende plek die ik ooit gezien heb: Death Valley. &lt;a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/bcortooms/DeathValley#5432804895246396114"&gt;Rotswanden&lt;/a&gt;&#160;in allerlei kleuren. Enorme &lt;a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/bcortooms/DeathValley#5432804810648380994"&gt;drooggevallen rivierbeddingen&lt;/a&gt;. Een&#160;bevroren ijsmeer dat geen ijs is maar &lt;a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/bcortooms/DeathValley#5432804816937173554"&gt;zout&lt;/a&gt;. En muisstil.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Daarna zijn we naar Los Angeles gereden. Geen heel bijzondere&#160;stad, maar ze hebben er wel wat &lt;a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/bcortooms/LosAngeles#5433762978212642738"&gt;leuke stranden&lt;/a&gt;&#160;en er is geen gebrek aan dure villa's van rijke filmsterren. Op zondagavond besloten we naar het&#160;centrum te gaan, waar we uitkwamen bij een of andere tent waar de&#160;afterparty van de Grammy awards was. Waar wij overigens geen weet van&#160;hadden totdat we vroegen wat er te doen was aan een van de vele mensen&#160;die buiten stonden te wachten op de sterren die nog naar binnen moesten.&#160;Die ik geen gezien heb. He wanted to know what was taking up so much space. Given the hierarchical structure of directories and files, he first tried a &lt;a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tree_%28data_structure%29"&gt;tree diagram&lt;/a&gt;. It got too big too fast to be useful though. Too many nodes. Too many branches.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;The &lt;a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Treemapping"&gt;treemap&lt;/a&gt; was his solution.
